NSW:Gordon Wood appeals cliff plunge conviction
By Margaret Scheikowski
SYDNEY, Aug 22 AAP - Gordon Wood's murder trial miscarried as scientific evidence about
his lover's cliff plunge was based on flawed assumptions and a wrongly dated photograph
of the scene, his appeal has been told.
His barrister Tim Game SC listed flawed, fixed assumptions put to the jury, noting
that a cliff scene photo said to have been taken in 1996 was in fact taken in 2003.
The crown's crucial witness, Associate Professor Rod Cross, had opined that Caroline
Byrne could not have landed where she did unless she was "spear thrown" by a strong male.
He argued against her having thrown herself off the cliff, saying she would only have
had a very short run-up of four metres, due to one metre of bushes.
Referring to the wrongly dated photo, Mr Game said it was highly probable that there
was not one metre of bushes in 1996 and that there was a run-up of at least five metres.
But Wendy Abraham, QC, for the crown, said even if there was an issue with the vegetation,
"it makes no iota of difference".
Wood was not present on Monday when his conviction challenge began in the NSW Court
of Criminal Appeal, but his relatives were, as was Ms Byrne's father.
In 2008, a jury found the then 46-year-old Wood guilty of murdering the 24-year-old
model at The Gap, a notorious Sydney suicide spot, late on the night of June 7, 1995.
He was jailed for at least 13 years, after the jury rejected a claim that Ms Byrne,
whose mother killed herself in 1991, had jumped off the cliff.
Wood's grounds of appeal include that the evidence and opinions of Prof Cross caused
the trial to miscarry.
The defence also say the trial judge made errors, including ruling that evidence showing
rocks at the base of The Gap being covered in water was irrelevant.
Mr Game said the crown proceeded on the basis that there was only a four metre run-up
and "not a centimetre more", but the photo's date "changes the parameters in a very significant
way".
"You have a completely different set of figures," he said, referring to Prof Cross's
calculations.
Other assumptions included that because a witness said Wood could bench press 100 kilos,
he had the capacity to spear throw his 57-kilo lover.
"It is just speculation he could do such a throw," Mr Game said.
He referred to experiments by Prof Cross in which he got "burly policeman to throw
co-operating subjects".
None of the subjects were struggling or limp, which led to a "quite fatal blow" to
the whole of the professor's evidence.
"The case has been put into an evidentiary straitjacket that just does not fit," Mr Game added.
The appeal will continue on Wednesday.
Outside court, Wood's sister Michelle said the family was hoping the appeal would lead
to justice being served.
"It has been long wait for a man who (is) innocent, who has been in jail for the last
three years," she said.
"He is extremely lifted by the amount of support that he receives - his family and
friends of course - and many hundreds of strangers that have written and provided support."

SYDNEY, Feb 11 AAP - A weekly round-up of news affecting your health.
LABEL IT, DON'T TAX US
Australians favour more local production of fresh produce over bans or taxes when it
comes to combating obesity and improving the diet.
A poll of 500 adult Victorians found 95 per cent supported "clear country-of-origin"
labelling, while 90 per cent want government policies that "encourage farmers markets"
or lead to more "production of fruit and vegetables in Australia to be consumed locally".
In contrast, support for a ban on junk food ads during childrens' TV programs was 78
per cent while a majority (52 per cent) supported a ban on TV junk food ads altogether.
Least supported was a ban on all imports of fresh foods from overseas (48 per cent
in agreement), allowing nature strips to be used to grow fruit and vegetables (42 per
cent) and imposing a junk food tax to fund healthy eating campaigns (36 per cent).
The study was by Professor Tony Worsley from Deakin University.
ZERO SUGAR TRAP
It says "diet" on the label but that does not always mean a health benefit, according
to research into soft drink and stroke.
A US study tracked the diet soda intake, and incidence of stroke, of more than 2,500
people over almost 10 years.
Ruling out other factors, those who drank the soda every day had a 61 per cent increased
risk of vascular events - including ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke - than those who drank
none.
"It would suggest that diet soda may not be the optimal substitute for sugar-sweetened
beverages for protection against vascular outcomes," said Hannah Gardener, lead researcher
and epidemiologist at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
The research presented at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference 2011.
BEAUTY SLEEP
A British study has emphasised the importance of a good night's sleep, as to routinely
miss out increases a person's risk of serious long-term health problems.
Professor Francesco Cappuccio, from the University of Warwick Medical School, reviewed
sleep pattern and health data from more than 470,000 people from eight countries including
Japan, USA and UK.
"If you sleep less than six hours per night and have disturbed sleep you stand a 48
per cent greater chance of developing or dying from heart disease and a 15 per cent greater
chance of developing or dying of a stroke," Prof Cappuccio concluded.
"The trend for late nights and early mornings is actually a ticking time bomb for our health."
Chronic short sleep results in hormones and chemicals linked to high blood pressure
and cholesterol, diabetes and obesity.
The research was published in the European Heart Journal.
... AND ANOTHER REASON
Add colon cancer to the list of health woes which can be caused by poor sleep, according
to a study to be published in journal Cancer.
Researchers from Ohio's University Hospitals Case Medical Center and Case Western Reserve
University School of Medicine, found people who averaged less than six hours of sleep
had an almost 50 per cent increased risk of colorectal adenomas compared with those who
slept at least seven hours nightly.
Adenomas are a precursor to cancer tumours and, if untreated, they can turn malignant.
"A short amount of sleep can now be viewed as a new risk factor for the development
of the development of colon cancer," said principal investigator Dr Li Li.
The reason is not known though it may stem from a reduced production of melatonin,
a hormone that has been linked to DNA repair.
GREY MATTERS
Older smokers may be on the fast-track to cognitive decline.
A study conducted at The University of Western Australia found older smokers damage
their grey matter, and lose cognitive function, at a greater rate than their non-smoking
peers.
Researchers tracked 332 people aged 68 and over, including those who smoked more than
five cigarettes a day, for two years.
It also showed it was never too late to quit.
"One finding that is really important from a health point of view is that chronic smokers
who quit during the study lost less brain cells and retained better intellectual function
than those who continued to smoke," said Professor Osvaldo Almeida.
THE CRUELLEST BUSINESS?
An Editorial published this week in the Lancet criticised the tobacco industry for
expanding its "morally repugnant" business into developing countries.
Last week saw Imperial Tobacco report increases in sales of cigarettes to Africa, the
Middle East and Asia Pacific, resulting in sharp rise in its share price.
The editorial describes the "selling, addicting and killing" mode of these companies
as "surely the most cruel and corrupt business model human beings could have invented".
Tobacco companies view the industry as "recession resistant ... it is also morally
repugnant", the editorial states.

VIC:Wettest winter for 11 years in Melbourne

VIC:Wettest winter for 11 years in Melbourne
MELBOURNE, Aug 27 AAP - Melbourne is in the grip of its wettest winter in 11 years.
After seven years of below-average winter rain, Melbourne has received 156mm of rain
so far this winter, above the average of 147mm.
And regional Victoria has also benefited from good rainfall, with Ballarat recording
its wettest month in 33 years and Bendigo its wettest month in 18 years.
Tom Saunders, meteorologist at The Weather Channel, said the rainfall was starting
to have an impact on the state's water storage levels, with the combined level now above
40 per cent in August for the first time in four years.
"Melbourne has not actually recorded an entire year with above-average rain since 1996.
This year could be close, with rain so far only 30mm below the long-term average to August,"
he said.
It has also been a bumper snow season in Victoria's alps.
After a slow start to the season, some resorts now have their deepest snow in six years.
"There has been a regular passage of cold fronts this month, which has ensured consistent
snowfalls across the alps," Mr Saunders said.
"The snow has been particularly heavy this week with four cold fronts sweeping over
southeastern Australia during the past three days alone. Most resorts have reported nearly
one metre of fresh snow."
At Victoria's largest ski resort, Falls Creek, 54cm of snow fell in 24 hours, taking
accumulated snowfall to 226cm this month - the best since 1992.
Mr Saunders said snowfall would now decrease as the last of the cold fronts moved into
the Tasman Sea.

NSW: NSW drought spreading to the cities: Macdonald
SYDNEY, Aug 17 AAP - The drought still holds almost two-thirds of NSW in its grip,
with hardworking families now feeling the pinch at the supermarket checkout, NSW Primary
Industries Minister Ian Macdonald says.
The area of NSW that is officially drought-declared has increased slightly over the
last month, from 65 per cent to 66.2 per cent, Mr Macdonald said.
Another 18.5 per cent of NSW is marginal, down from 20.9 per cent in mid-July.
Only 15.3 per cent of NSW is declared "satisfactory", up from 14.1 per cent last month.
Mr Macdonald said that while farmers remained optimistic about this year's crop prospects,
above average spring rainfall was needed to give them a reasonable yield.
"The good news is that our cropping sector is in a much better position than this time
last year," he said.
"However, we really need good rain before the end of August.
"Only the eastern third of NSW received reasonable rainfall in July and unfortunately
this rainfall was just not widespread or significant enough to make a real dent in the
ongoing dry conditions for much of regional NSW."
Mr Macdonald said the drought was not only hitting rural areas hard.
City dwellers were also paying the price at supermarkets for staples such as rice, he said.
"Water availability in irrigated agriculture areas like the Murray Valley is extremely
low - this has a cumulative effect, affecting prices from the farm gate to the checkout,"
he said.

WA: A tumultuous year in WA politics
By Adam Gartrell
PERTH, AAP - The West Australian government will limp battered and bloodied into 2007,
after a tumultuous year beset with scandal and crisis.
It began with a bang: Just 16 days in, the affable `good news premier', Geoff Gallop,
announced he was stepping down because he was suffering from depression.
The shock resignation left the government scrambling to find a replacement but the
state development minister Alan Carpenter soon emerged as the front-runner.
After he was anointed, the 49-year-old father of four declared he was looking forward
to leading the government into a new "golden era", as WA continued to ride high on the
wave of the resources boom.
Instead, his first year in the top job has been horrific.
Less than a week after he was sworn in, Carpenter made what would later prove to be
a huge mistake: elevating veteran MP Norm Marlborough to the frontbench.
In doing so, Carpenter symbolically overturned Gallop's ban on ministerial contact
with disgraced former premier Brian Burke, despite warnings he would live to regret it.
Placing his arm around Marlborough's shoulder, Carpenter said he was absolutely confident
Marlborough's close friendship with Burke would not interfere with his job as small business
minister.
Marlborough knew there would be scrutiny of his relationship with Burke but could never
have predicted the state's corruption watchdog would be listening to their phone conversations.
Premier for five years in the 1980s, Burke was jailed for seven months in 1994 for
rorting travel expenses.
His reign is now most commonly associated with the WA Inc era, when his government
had disastrous dealings with big business which cost WA taxpayers big dollars.
The Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC) began tapping his phones this year while
investigating his role as a political lobbyist for Canal Rocks, a company which wants
to develop a controversial tourism project in the state's south-west.
The CCC wanted to find out whether Burke, or other Canal Rocks proponents, were exerting
"undisclosed or improper influence" on public officers in their efforts to get the development
approved.
Soon after they began listening in, CCC investigators heard a number of incredible
- and now infamous - conversations between Burke and Marlborough.
During public hearings in November, the extraordinary story emerged: The day after
joining the Carpenter ministry Marlborough went out and bought a second mobile phone,
in his wife's name, which he used as an exclusive "hotline" to and from Burke.
The pair spoke up to 10 times a day on the phone, with Burke urging Marlborough to
appoint a particular woman to a government board and instructing him how to answer questions
in parliament.
It had been an open secret that Burke had wielded some behind-the-scenes influence
within the government since Labor was returned to power in 2001, but few realised the
extent of that influence.
The calls made Marlborough seem like Burke's lap dog: loyal, well-trained and compliant.
Burke, meanwhile, emerged as a Machiavellian puppet-master.
The revelations forced Marlborough off the frontbench and out of parliament. They also
forced Burke out of the ALP after more than 40 years as a member.
But the CCC stepped up its inquiries: Who else was on the phone to Burke? Just who
really is running this state?
Then-resources minister John Bowler was forced to detail a string of dealings he had
with Burke. While he insisted the dealings were legitimate, his otherwise good name was
tarred by the Burke brush.
Later, Labor backbencher Adele Farina told the CCC how Burke approached her to help
him push Canal Rocks' interests.
But instead of becoming another Burke lackey, the head-strong Farina refused his requests
and subsequently fell victim to his wrath.
When she was preparing to seek re-endorsement for her seat for the 2004 election, Farina
says Mr Burke told her her pre-selection was at risk because he and his powerful right
faction no longer supported her.
To win back that support, he apparently told her, she would have to be "more helpful".
Farina believes that a one-off deal between Gallop and the ALP National Executive was
the only thing that kept her from being ousted by Burke's machinations.
While it was heartening to learn there were some people prepared to stand up to Burke,
Farina's evidence was also a disturbing insight into Burke's mind-set, showing he was
prepared to punish and blackmail those he could not persuade.
The Burke scandal hit a Carpenter already wearied by controversy.
In May, Carpenter was forced to strip his former "rising star", John D'Orazio, of the
police portfolio after it was revealed he had been driving without a licence for two months.
But instead of dumping D'Orazio from the frontbench, Carpenter gave him new portfolios.
Criticism of this half-measure forced D'Orazio to retreat to the backbench.
The plot thickened several months later when D'Orazio was called to give evidence at
a CCC probe into Perth panel beater Pasquale Minniti, accused of using police contacts
to help his friends avoid traffic infringements.
The CCC revealed that D'Orazio met with Minniti in the days after he lost his portfolio.
Though no evidence was presented that D'Orazio actually did anything wrong, it was
another embarrassment for Carpenter.
He asked D'Orazio to resign from the Labor party, which D'Orazio reluctantly did.
Two other ministers were in the firing line in 2006.
Ljiljanna Ravlich spent much of the year on the back foot as education minister.
First, she became the target of widespread discontent over the implementation in WA
of outcomes-based education (OBE).
In October, a damning CCC report into her department's handling of sexual misconduct
allegations weakened her tenuous position further.
Teachers, the state opposition and the general public, whipped up by a relentless media
campaign, called constantly for her sacking.
There were also persistent calls for Sheila McHale's sacking over her years as community
development minister.
In August, the state coroner slammed the Department of Community Development (DCD)
for failing - under McHale's watch - to protect 11-month-old Wade Scale, who drowned while
in the care of his drug-addicted parents.
The opposition called for a royal commission into the DCD, saying scores of young children
known to the department had died of "unknown or unnatural causes" in recent times.
After a month of sustained attack over the issue, Carpenter announced an urgent funding
boost for the DCD. The furore subsided, but McHale was significantly damaged.
Despite all its woes, a recent newspaper poll showed voters still prefer the government
over the opposition under Paul Omodei, who, since becoming leader in March, has struggled
for traction.
But Carpenter realises the government has to lift its game if it is to stay in an election-winning
position. So, in a major cabinet reshuffle on December 13, he demoted Ravlich, Bowler
and McHale to junior portfolios.
Carpenter is hoping a fresh frontbench will signal a fresh start. But instead of looking
forward to a shining new "golden age", Carpenter will probably be content with just a
bit of peace of quiet.
Of course, if Ravlich or McHale do manage to make a mess of their new portfolios, it
will be another mark against Carpenter's leadership.
And another storm looms on the horizon: In February, the CCC will hold new, and much
more wide-ranging, public hearings into Burke's lobbying activities.
Just who else will be ensnared is anyone's guess.

WA: Admin costs push up health budget by $94m
PERTH, April 9 AAP - The West Australian health system is employing hundreds of highly
paid administrative staff at the expense of more doctors and nurses, opposition health
spokeswoman Kim Hames says.
Dr Hames said administration staffing costs had increased by more than $94 million
in the past five years.
The additional expense was enough to employ 1,700 extra nurses, but instead it had
gone to administrators and bureaucratic fat cats, he said.
"This huge rise for administration is part of the reason we have not seen any real
improvement in health services under the Labor government," Dr Hames said.
"This $94.6 million has not gone towards more doctors, nurses or beds - it has gone
solely towards administration, the bureaucrats of the system.
"There are not enough beds in hospitals and patients' wait list (elective) surgery
is continually being cancelled, yet the number of administration staff, who have nothing
to do with patients, has blown out by 604 in five years."
Acting director general for health John de Campo rejected the claims, saying the number
of clinical staff employed in the health system between 2001 and 2005 had greatly outweighed
the increase in administrative staff.
"Between June 2001 and June 2005, an additional 3,586 medical, nursing and medical
support staff were employed in our public hospitals at a cost of $516.5 million," Dr de
Campo said.
He said there had been an increase of 2,231 nurses, 899 additional allied health staff
and 456 more doctors in the period June 2001 to June 2005.

Kelty Christopher M., 2008, Two Bits. The Cultural Significance of Free Software.(Book review)
KELTY Christopher M., 2008, Two Bits. The Cultural Significance of Free Software. Durham, Duke University Press, 378 p., bibliogr., index (Jerome Cormier)
Two Bits.

The world is not enough.
By Contributing Editor Melissa Larson
OH label printer with global customers adds a Mark Andy Performance Series press to greatly expand its quality, productivity and technology.
When you're running a successful 24/7 tag and decal printing operation, buying a new flexo press to run clear films may seem counterintuitive. But for president Gregg Trebnick of Trebnick Systems, it's all part of his five-year plan.
"We always have a five-year plan in mind," says the upbeat and forward-thinking entrepreneur. "Our durables and tags business is doing so well, yet we're always asking ourselves on each new order, 'Is there a different material that can do a better job?'" Eyeing unsupported-film applications, and perhaps even flexible packaging, Trebnick decided to purchase a Performance Series P7 narrow-web flexographic-printing press supplied by Mark Andy. It was installed in December 2009.
Privately held and family-run, the Springboro, OH-based printer has been in the label business for 15 years and employs 20 people, including part-timers. Its operation includes an in-house art department capable of revising original advertising-agency artwork, although 100 percent of platemaking is outsourced.
"Due to increased business, we've hired four new employees in the last
five months," Trebnick says.
Two older 6-color, 10-in. and 13-in. Nilpeter narrow-web flexo presses handle the thriving business in tags, decals and primary product labels, many of which incorporate Valeron[R], DuPont Tyvek[R] and Kimdura[R] high-performance films. Labels and tags that stand up to harsh environments and hazardous materials are touted as a Trebnick specialty. Through a worldwide network of distributors, the converter supplies its products to a variety of end-use markets, including chemical/industrial, pharmaceutical, consumer food and retail.
Providing the right adhesive for the job is another strength. Trebnick offers permanent, removable or repositionable adhesive labels for many substrates including high-temperature, wood, drum, plastic, steel and even glass surfaces. Custom top coatings for thermal-transfer, laser, dot-matrix, inkjet and direct-thermal printing are also available.
Trebnick's demonstrated ability to turn out drum labels, decals, warning labels and other outdoor products requiring durable materials has brought the company increasing overseas business. In fact, according to Gregg Trebnick, the majority of his business in 2009 was derived from customers in such far-flung locations as Saudi Arabia, Dubai, South America, China, India, Japan and Europe.
Taking his time
Unlike most successful converters who have specific jobs in mind for a new press and want it up and running as soon as possible, Trebnick is in no particular hurry to start cranking out large print jobs on the P7. Rather, he is carefully analyzing which print jobs and customer prospects are best suited for the capabilities of the new press. Also, he's determining which ancillary equipment (sheeters, rewinders, etc.) will best help the P7 reach its full potential.
That said, Trebnick has already seen some success with the P7. Orders are in process which will result in up to $400,000 in incremental business for the converter.
Launched at Labelexpo Europe last fall, the Mark Andy Performance Series P7 press has been sold to 12 customers worldwide so far. Trebnick Systems' model, an 8-color, 17-in. version with a final UV-curing station, is only the second P7 purchased by an American company. Maximum print speed is 750 fpm. Important features include:
A print-station design that allows the operator to set up a single station in less than a minute.
An inking system that combines several steps into one quick motion.
Automatic pre-registration and re-registration.
Servo-driven infeed pacing; independently servo-driven plate cylinder and impression roll; and servo-driven die station with 360-deg registration management.
VariPrint feature for extensible substrates, which reportedly ensures perfect registration on virtually any stretchable substrate.
Instant remote diagnostics with an Internet connection.
Printing of anti-counterfeiting work is one of the P7's most important capabilities. "It has a registration tolerance of +/-0.002 in., so that it will do both overt and covert anti-counterfeiting systems, as well as cold or hot foil," Trebnick says.
While the P7 is said to be ideal for short runs with its rapid changeover capabilities and automatic pre- and re-registration, Trebnick also sees the press's high-speed benefits for longer runs. "We're finding out that there is no order too big with the speed of this press," he continues. "Super long-run orders are a capability of the P7 that older press technologies cannot compete with on our specialty substrates, film, paper labels and synthetics."
Global savvy
Gregg Trebnick has learned the tricks of the trade that are necessary to supply international customers from his headquarters in Ohio. For instance, he sends print samples for customer approval before the job is run, opened a line of credit to even out cash flow, and has the customer pay for shipping.
"We have a different way of doing things," Trebnick says, "and we've even walked away from business.
"All press operators are unmanaged; they are their own supervisor. The only requirement is to have a sign-off. Bill Parsons, a senior operator with 26 years of experience, places requisitions for the press operators."
A professed "self-taught" converter, he sees running uncoated and unsupported films, at high speeds, as the next technical hurdle to be overcome. "We bought the [Mark Andy] press for three main reasons. For higher quality, for more productive press operators, and to advance our level of technology. Flexo is going to be a big part of our future.
"We've never been a 'me-too' operation, and with the new press, we're even less interested in commodity products," Trebnick says. "Our motto is 'one job at a time.' We've doubled our warehouse space, and thanks in part to the new press, we're ready for whatever comes along."

Press Association teaches kids to 'learn the news'.(News)
Primary school pupils are getting wind of the basic principles of journalism.
The latest development in the South African Press Association's schools' newspaper project, Learn the News, involves carrying news pages of stories written by children.
First, however, they take |a course in citizen journalism: |a term that was the focus of the most recent annual Highway Africa journalism conference at Rhodes University, Grahamstown.
It's to do with technological advances enabling citizens to submit news stories for publication, usually through cellphones.
"I tell them about accuracy, sourcing, getting the different sides of a story, developing a nose for news and becoming critical readers," said Learn the News editor Duncan Guy.
Stories that have appeared on the citizen journalism page of his e-mail publication, which is funded by the Open Society Foundation for SA, include one by Thando Khumalo and Kylie Bond of Solid Foundations Primary School in Kempton Park about two different problems relating to dogs.
The one case was about a dog that bit a jogger, the other involved a pet that was poisoned.
Ciara Flint of Holy Cross de la Salle College took her pen and paper to a party for a story to produce a timeline of "exactly what happens" at these events that parents may fear.
Orange Grove Primary School produced stories relating to bread-and-butter issues when Bonani Mafuna and Shael Bita gave an account of the effect of rising food prices.
"We all know that South Africa is going through a crisis called poverty, so I decided to go out on the streets and ask people how it has affected their daily lifestyles," wrote Bonani.
"It has affected us in a bad way, so that we have to eat bread every day. Because of the high cost, we have to pay a higher price than before, one of the affected people said."
Shane Ncube wrote a report on the floods in Soweto.
Chili Kier, of St James Preparatory School in Belgravia, the school that pioneered Learn the News four years ago, did |a report on a Midmar Mile trial at a dam in the Cradle of |Humankind while his classmate Kajal Morar gave an account of |a gala in Lenasia.
"He researched the broader topic of swimming on the internet and correctly quoted the exact website, instead of sourcing 'the internet'," added Guy.
Bhavishal Ramsammy pres-ented a profile of Fordsburg's market square.
At the time of going to press, Learn the News was eagerly awaiting the next batch of citizen journalism contributions from |St Teresa's Mercy Convent in Rosebank, Joburg.
"Sometimes contributors get exactly the right idea of how |a news story should be written, sometimes they get some idea. But it's a start," said Guy.
"The point is they've had an introduction to journalism. |I hope that down the line they will become better citizen journalists - or career journalists - and critical readers who create market demand for quality journalism."

Kodak is expecting that higher priced products will boost sales this Christmas season. They have stated, that they're attempting create a start-to-finish experience similar to what Apple Computer Inc. has done with the iPod music player. Kodak has experienced eight quarters of losses, no one is sure if this will be a point of turnaround for this company. Their Chief Executive Officer Antonio Perez believes pricier systems and Internet services that make photos into Christmas cards could be the answer. In achieving a one stop shop for all your photo needs, Kodak imagines moms taking pictures, organizing them with Kodak's EasyShare software, printing them on Kodak printer docks, to create cards or calendars. Kodak's share value has suffered greatly in years past, as it missed the digital boom. It should be interesting to see how this new approach fairs, and to see if Kodak can once again establish itself as a powerhouse in the camera world.

Norbert Dawalibi, President and CEO of Sirit Inc. had some positive, bold statements to describe their new Chief Technology Officer, "Earlier this year, we began a working relationship with Bruce on a development project during which we realized that with his broad and extensive RFID acumen, Bruce was the logical fit to head our overall corporate development team."
Bruce Roesner stated that "Sirit has made important contributions to the RFID industry for years and in particular over the past 9 months with the introduction of the INfinity 510 UHF fixed reader and the IDentity MaX reader solutions." Mr. Roesner will be guiding this product into the New Year. The INfinity 510 was developed from the ground-up as a Gen 2 compliant multi-protocol reader and is delivering the best performance in its class. Even more recently Sirit Inc. has updated its INfinity 510 UHF as it expanded regulatory regional support phenomenally to include Australia, Brazil, Hong Kong, India, Japan, NZ, Singapore, Thailand, and Korea. They have also enhanced digital input / output technology for integration with sensors and actuators such as lights, and motion detectors. PinnacleDigest is excited to see how this product will develop, and will be engaged in its ongoing progress. OCG Technology Awards License to Argentinean based Telemedica, S.R.L.
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- OCG Technology, Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: OCGT) announced today that its wholly owned subsidiary PrimeCare Systems, Inc. ("PrimeCare"), has awarded an exclusive license to Telemedica, S.R.L. ("Telemedica"), based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The agreement gives Telemedica exclusive rights to market the PrimeCare(TM) Patient Management System, Version Nine ("PrimeCare(TM) Version Nine") in the "Mercosur", which is South America's free trade area, consisting of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Chile. Telemedica plans to use PrimeCare(TM) Version Nine initially to establish a fully integrated health network of Doctors and patients in Argentina. Telemedica intends to commence the installation of PrimeCare(TM) Version Nine at the beginning of 2006, in clinics in Argentina's northwest provinces.
Dr. Elias Hofman, Telemedica's Chief Medical Officer states, "Due to its functionality, PrimeCare(TM) Version Nine is unique among electronic medical records. It is patient and doctor interactive, flexible, inexpensive, and Internet-based, not requiring expensive computer hardware or software. Far more than an electronic medical record, the system improves how ambulatory medicine is delivered." Dr. Hofman also noted that Argentina is in desperate need of a national electronic medical registry, and that PrimeCare(TM) Version Nine could fill this need. Dr. Hofman is also a Professor in the Universidad Favaloro's Department of Family Medicine, located in Buenos Aires; is a founding member of the Sociedad Argentina de Endocrinologia y Metabolismo; is an associate of the International Medical Program at the Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Florida; and has a medical practice in Buenos Aires. Dr. Hofman possesses an authoritative knowledge of telemedicine, and has participated in medical call-in programs for BBC Mundo (BBC's Spanish language service).
Robert A. Shiver, recently appointed President of PrimeCare comments, "We are extremely pleased that Dr. Hofman, after investigating many medical record systems and utilizing PrimeCare(TM) Version Nine for almost a year, has chosen PrimeCare(TM) Version Nine as the backbone to achieve a national electronic medical registry for Argentina."
Telemedica's stated mission is to assist Argentina's 39 million people in living longer and healthier lives, while lowering healthcare costs and improving the productivity of the Country's healthcare investment. The Argentine government's healthcare expenditure is $13 billion per year, which is about 8.4% of Argentina's GDP. Telemedica believes that, if widely implemented, PrimeCare(TM) Version Nine could reduce this expenditure, saving the healthcare system a minimum of $500 million yearly. Savings would come primarily from PrimeCare(TM) Version Nine's enhanced diagnostic capabilities and improved, system-wide administrative functions. PrimeCare(TM) Version Nine's comprehensive knowledge bank of 280 symptom and problem oriented patient-interactive questionnaires could be used by doctors as a tool to avoid diagnostic pitfalls. PrimeCare(TM) Version Nine could enable Argentinean Doctors and healthcare administrators to better manage patient information through real time access to up-to-date data monitoring of resources, costs, treatment efficacy, patient flow, patient satisfaction rates, and staff efficiency allowing them to optimize decisions.
About OCG Technology, Inc. ("OCGT"):
OCGT, and its wholly owned subsidiary PrimeCare(TM), has developed, owns, maintains, updates, expands and markets the PrimeCare(TM) Version Nine (http://www.versionnine.com/), and several related Internet sites that use various sections of PrimeCare(TM) Version Nine: http://www.primecareontheweb.com/, http://www.yourowndoctor.com/ and http://www.yourownhealth.com/. PrimeCare(TM) Version Nine is a specially written front-end application designed to be downloaded by the client via a web connection, and then installed at the client's location using standard Windows installation procedures. This greatly simplifies and reduces the cost of both user installation and system maintenance.
