MEXICO CITY, Sep 02, 2004 (El Economista/Corporate Mexico by Internet Securities, Inc. via COMTEX) -- Public and private investments in development of infrastructure in the transportation and communications sector (SCT) in 2001-2003 reached 172.48 billion pesos (US$14.99 billion), of which 64.3% was channeled to communications and 35.7% to highways, railroads and airports, according to the notes of the IV Government Report.
The document stated that public and private investment planned for 2004 for the sector will total 108.4 billion pesos (US$9.42 billion), which is 120.4% more than was spent in 2003, in real terms. It added that in highway infrastructure, investments will reach 55.95 billion pesos (US$4.86 billion), four times more than that channeled into the roads last year.
The government estimated that basic telephone coverage will rise from 15.8 lines per 100 people in 2003 to 16.8 lines by the end of this year, which will mean 17.8 million users.
