Scotland plays host to Europe's top geographical research organisations Geographical information experts from 17 European countries are meeting in Edinburgh this week to develop ideas for making mapping and imagery data more accessible to all kinds of users - including via the Internet.

The meeting of the European Organisation for Experimental Photogrammetric Research - known by its French acronym OEEPE - is being hosted by Britain's national mapping agency, Ordnance Survey, at The Carlton Hotel, Edinburgh from Wednesday 31 May to Friday 1 June.

Computer-based geographical information systems and the expansion of the Internet have revolutionised the way geographical information can be used and transported - and this latest meeting is set to drive forward new ideas for harnessing such technology to make it even easier for people to have access to the information they need.

Ordnance Survey Director General and Chief Executive, Vanessa Lawrence, is a key note speaker at the event on the subject of electronic information services in the future and how Ordnance Survey is implementing its own e-strategy to stay at the forefront of geographical information services.

Presentations and demonstrations will also be made by John Rowland from Scottish Enterprise about the KMap project - for online information for economic development; and David Medyckyj-Scott of the University of Edinburgh who will talk about the EDINA Digimap Service - a virtual map library.
