CANBERRA, Jan 10 AAP - Doctors, not the government, should be responsible for cutting
back on excessive ultrasound tests on pregnant women, the opposition said today.

Labor Senator Rosemary Crowley rejected the federal government's plan to cut Medicare
rebates for the early term tests, usually conducted before the standard 17 or 18 week
test to check for abnormalities.

"There is a problem of overuse of ultrasound, but the answer lies with the doctors
and tightening professional standards," she said in a statement.
