Qld: Private hospital faces overdose allegations
Staff at a private hospital in Brisbane are facing allegations of overdosing with methadonea man who died following a routine back operation.
The widow of the 39-year-old has told a Brisbane inquest she was stood over and constantlyfobbed off after her husband PETER PHELPS was admitted to intensive care at Wesley Hospital.
The father-of-two died on February 23, 1997, after being found unconscious in his hospitalbed following the operation on February 6, 1997, to remove plates and pins from his lowerback.
Mr PHELPS, who suffered chronic back pain after an accident in 1977, was placed inan induced coma but later died.
His wife GAYLE, who's lobbied for five years for the inquest, told the hearing todaya nurse urged her to pursue the case a month after his death.
Mrs PHELPS says the nurse told her a lot of things didn't gel and the back surgeonhad told her he thought a sister had overdosed her husband, but he later denied makingthe comment.
However, Doctor DOUGLAS KILLER, Wesley's Medical Superintendent, has ruled out an overdose.
The inquest continues.
